MLB Icon Alex Rodriguez Shares Insights into His Current Diet and Kitchen Staples
Former baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez offers a look into his refrigerator and pantry, revealing how his eating habits have evolved since his playing days.

Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Alex Rodriguez, widely recognized as A-Rod, has not played professionally in a decade, and he acknowledges a significant reduction in his food intake compared to his time as a full-time athlete.
“During my 25-year career, I ate a lot more,” the celebrated MLB slugger, three-time MVP, and World Series champion explained in a video where he showcased the contents of his refrigerator and pantry at his Los Angeles residence. “I used to eat six times a day — a lot of steak, a lot of potatoes, a lot of rice, beans. You’re burning so much calories when you’re playing 162 games.”
Today, the 51-year-old entrepreneur, sports team owner, and broadcaster enjoys a diverse diet, balancing nutritious choices with a selection of favorite snack items.
Inside the Kitchen: Fridge and Pantry Essentials
Rodriguez shared that his refrigerator consistently holds ample water, specifying “some sparkling, but not too much,” along with eggs, spring lettuce mix, and various fruits such as bananas, apples, and oranges, which he considers “very important.” He typically consumes three to four meals daily and incorporates a protein shake.
While Rodriguez himself stopped drinking soft drinks five years ago, his refrigerator still contains a few “pop sodas” for visiting friends. Other essential items he keeps chilled include “always fresh, organic” blueberries, strawberries, various greens like salad and broccoli, and hummus for a late-night bite.
Describing himself as a “chips expert,” Rodriguez revealed an array of savory snacks in his pantry. This collection includes barbecue chips, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, Corn Nuts, and cashews. He humorously noted, “This is where I do my best work — at 2 a.m.,” and admitted to sometimes eating in bed. One food item Rodriguez states will never be found in his kitchen is liver.
Daily Meals and Culinary Preferences
For breakfast, Rodriguez’s standard meal consists of eggs, oatmeal, bacon, a small glass of orange juice, and plenty of water. Lunch typically features a salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, accompanied by either chicken or fish. His preferred dinner options are steak or salmon served with sweet potato fries — or “any type of fries, actually.” He also lightheartedly mentioned that he doesn’t cook any of his meals, joking that he would likely start a fire.
Rodriguez emphasized that he has never followed a specific diet. “I love to eat,” he stated, adding, “I have a great relationship with food.” He reflected on his playing career, noting that he used to “overeat” due to the immense energy demands of the sport. “Today I probably under-eat,” he observed, acknowledging, “which is not good. I need to eat more, especially some healthy proteins, more fruit, more water, more fuel.”
Favorite Flavors and Unique Combinations
Recalling his favorite pregame meal, Rodriguez cited a peanut butter and jelly sandwich paired with barbecue chips and two bottles of water. To celebrate significant victories, he enjoyed a substantial steak with a sweet potato or “some good sushi.”
His comfort foods often reflect his Dominican heritage, including rice and beans, plátanos maduros (sweet, ripe plantains fried until caramelized), and tostones (twice-fried, crispy green plantains).
When it comes to burgers, Rodriguez’s go-to is a double Whopper with cheese. He expressed a fondness for Burger King’s burgers but prefers McDonald’s French fries. The sports figure is also a considerable coffee drinker, estimating he consumes between seven and eight cups daily. Before workouts, he opts for a Celsius energy drink. He also incorporates protein shakes — made with protein powder, fruit, and a bit of peanut butter — into his daily routine.
For supplements, Rodriguez takes vitamin C, a multivitamin, and magnesium to aid with sleep. His preferred ballpark snack is a hot dog, specifically a Dodger Dog, served at Los Angeles Dodgers games. “I also like a great pretzel,” he added, describing it as “nice and warm and big.”
Rodriguez also shared an unusual favorite food combination he calls the “A-Rod special”: a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with deli turkey.
