California Couple Alleges Moving Company Doubled Price, Holds Belongings Hostage
A California couple relocating to North Carolina alleges their moving company demanded additional payments and is now withholding their possessions after an initial price hike.
U.S.·

A California couple embarking on a cross-country move has accused their moving company of drastically increasing the agreed-upon cost and subsequently holding their household possessions. The situation, which unfolded at the end of May, has left John Nelson and his wife, who were relocating from Oceanside to North Carolina, without their belongings.
Relocation Turns Sour with Sudden Price Hike
The couple initially secured a contract with a moving broker for a full-service move, priced just over $16,000, and paid an upfront deposit of $7,000. However, on the scheduled moving day, the company allegedly presented a new, significantly higher charge of $32,000. The movers reportedly justified the increase by claiming the Nelsons had more items than initially estimated.
Despite his reservations, Mr. Nelson felt compelled to proceed with the higher payment to avoid forfeiting his substantial deposit. Yet, the challenges did not end there. Upon the anticipated delivery of their goods, the couple claims the company attempted to levy additional fees.
Allegations of Misleading Delivery and 'Ransom'
According to the Nelsons, the moving company tried to deliver their property on June 3, which was a full week before the date Mr. Nelson had specified he would be available to receive the shipment. This premature delivery attempt allegedly led the contractors to demand an extra fee for redelivery.
"They’ve got $30,000 and they’ve got our stuff… and they’re basically holding it for ransom," Nelson stated, expressing his frustration. "When you move, it’s an exciting thing...you never expect for somebody to take your stuff and not deliver it."
Mr. Nelson further suggested that the initial delivery attempt might have been a deliberate tactic to pressure them into paying more. He pointed out that the truck captured on video during this attempt did not appear to be the same vehicle that had loaded their belongings.
"I think they just pulled up an empty truck to stage a charade," he remarked. "As far as I’m concerned, they’ve got stolen property that’s crossed state lines."
Official Complaints and Broker's History
In response to the ongoing dispute, John Nelson and his wife have filed police reports in both Oceanside, California, and their new city in North Carolina. They have also lodged complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), a consumer protection organization that assists in resolving issues between customers and businesses.
Records show that the moving broker involved in this incident has accumulated 280 complaints with the BBB over the past three years. While the broker has reportedly disputed the Nelsons' specific claims, they have indicated that they are actively working toward a resolution.
