Centrist Democratic Group Launches $15 Million Campaign Targeting Democratic Socialists After Primary Wins

A centrist Democratic organization, Third Way, has unveiled a $15 million initiative aimed at confronting the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which it describes as posing a "mortal danger" to the broader Democratic Party.

This strategic move follows a series of recent electoral successes by left-leaning candidates. Notably, Abdul El-Sayed secured a narrow victory over the more moderate incumbent Democratic Representative Haley Stevens in a high-profile Michigan Senate primary. This outcome, along with wins by other DSA-aligned and progressive candidates in two Michigan congressional primaries, builds on earlier successes throughout the spring and summer. These victories are seen as emboldening the progressive wing within the Democratic Party's ongoing ideological struggle.

Initiative Follows Key Primary Victories

Third Way's comprehensive effort will involve extensive opposition research into the DSA, public opinion polling, social media outreach programs, and educational initiatives for Democratic activists and leaders. The group has clarified that its campaign is not directed at individual candidates, some of whom have already become the party's nominees in an increasing number of congressional races for the upcoming midterm elections.

A growing apprehension among moderate Democrats centers on the belief that nominating overtly left-leaning candidates in crucial Senate and House contests could undermine the party's bid to reclaim congressional majorities from Republicans in the midterms.

Concerns for Upcoming Elections and 2028 Race

Beyond the immediate electoral cycle, there is also concern that the primary victories achieved by the left wing this year, often at the expense of establishment-backed incumbents and challengers, could bolster progressive contenders in the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination race. This race is expected to commence following the November elections.

Addressing El-Sayed's victory in Michigan, which is a significant early voting state in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary schedule, Matt Bennett of Third Way indicated that it "gives the 2028 presidential field the wrong idea of how to win the presidential primary in places in Michigan."
