Commentator Dan Dakich Criticizes WNBA Players' Accountability Amid Caitlin Clark Controversy
After her suspension for an incident with Caitlin Clark, Alyssa Thomas's comments spark sharp rebuke from a sports commentator regarding player responsibility and league response.

Following a recent incident involving rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, WNBA player Alyssa Thomas has expressed that league athletes are being unfairly portrayed as antagonists. However, sports commentator Dan Dakich contends that Thomas's remarks align with a recurring trend of WNBA players allegedly avoiding accountability for their conduct.
Thomas, a forward for the Mercury, spoke to journalists after receiving a one-game suspension from the league. The disciplinary action stemmed from her “recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area” of Clark during a June 24 victory against the Indiana Fever.
She stated that some players, herself included, were unaware the play had generated significant controversy until after the match concluded. Thomas remarked, “And now we’re being painted as thugs,” further noting the presence of “death threats out on us.”
Dakich Challenges Thomas's Stance
Dakich, however, dismissed these claims. During a recent broadcast, the commentator responded to Thomas’s statements, characterizing her reaction as predictable. Dakich asserted, “Say you’ve gotten death threats, blame the fans. You've got to blame the fans because you can’t take personal responsibility.”
He continued with further criticism, stating, “Because for 30 years, angry lesbians, African-American lesbians in the WNBA haven’t had to take any personal responsibility. Everybody else, Diana Taurasi, you see it with Paige Bueckers and others, go along to get along.” He then added, “Well, you know what the only person not talking is? Caitlin Clark.”
Clark herself remained largely silent following the incident, while many others weighed in on the matter.
This dynamic has become a recurring theme within the WNBA. While Clark garners significant attention, drawing larger crowds and increasing revenue, contentious situations involving her often see the narrative shift. Instead of focusing on the impact on Clark, discussions frequently pivot to how the controversy affects players involved in physical altercations with her.
League Response Under Scrutiny
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued a statement that supported Thomas, a move that critics observed did not include any direct mention or support for Clark.
The WNBA vehemently condemns any and all forms of hate. The safety and well-being of everyone in our community is always the league’s top priority. We are aware of Alyssa Thomas’ comments, and what she and her teammates have experienced is completely unacceptable and not representative of the WNBA community. The league and our security team have been in contact with the Phoenix Mercury organization and remain committed to protecting all players.
Thomas, however, indicated that the league's response was insufficient. She stated, “The league needs to put a stand on it. They came out with no hate speech, but what is that gonna do? I’m sick and tired of it. It’s time for them to stand up and have our backs in these instances.”
While no one condones social media death threats, a question arose regarding the league's selective response. Engelbert's statement addressing Thomas's concerns was released promptly, prompting observers to question why a similar statement specifically addressing Clark's experience was not issued.
Expert Weighs In on WNBA's Preparedness
This point was raised by veteran women's sports reporter Christine Brennan during a discussion with Dakich. Brennan inquired, “Is the league going to speak out at all about the visual that will live with this league, I believe forever?”
Brennan emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating, “I think that picture, the fist to the throat, is that big of a deal. Caitlin Clark, with all the TV ratings, all the attendance figures, everything that she has brought, she has made Alyssa Thomas’ life better. She’s making more money, she's not in the middle seat anymore in coach... And instead, you’ve got the fist to the throat.”
This perspective offers a stark, yet arguably precise, summary of the WNBA's trajectory since Clark's arrival. Clark has undeniably elevated the WNBA's profile, increasing its audience, financial standing, and overall recognition. This benefit extends beyond her, impacting players, coaches, and team owners across the league.
Her influence notably benefited other athletes, transforming discussions about charter flights into a tangible reality. Furthermore, her impact provided significant leverage for the WNBPA in negotiating substantial pay raises within the upcoming 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Ironically, Clark herself will not fully benefit from these salary increases, having signed her rookie contract before the CBA's adoption, which positions her as significantly underpaid by comparison.
Despite these widespread benefits, the league appears largely unprepared for the comprehensive implications of having such a prominent superstar. Brennan contended that the WNBA's initial handling of the situation was inadequate. She attributed this to “the lack of anticipation of the moment when you could see it coming a mile away,” highlighting the immense viewership Clark commanded in women’s college basketball prior to her WNBA debut. Brennan concluded, “And then the WNBA was completely and utterly unprepared for the moment.”
This assessment seems evident given recent events. The WNBA sought increased attention, financial growth, television viewership, and mainstream recognition, all of which Clark has delivered. The challenge now for the league is to effectively manage all aspects that accompany the presence of a genuine superstar. However, almost three years into this new era, the league's strategy for this remains unclear.
