LeRoy Irvin, a distinguished two-time Pro Bowl cornerback renowned for his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams, has passed away at the age of 68.
The news of Irvin's passing was shared by his former Los Angeles Rams teammate, Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, who expressed his profound sadness on Instagram, stating he was "devastated." Los Angeles journalist Eric Geller, who had collaborated with Irvin following his NFL career, indicated in a post on X that Irvin had been contending with throat cancer. Specific details regarding the circumstances of his death were not immediately released.
Tributes from Teammates and Organization
"LeRoy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy," Dickerson shared. "Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation."
Dickerson accompanied his tribute with a photograph depicting himself and Irvin at an event hosted by Dickerson's foundation.
A Storied Career with the Rams
Irvin began his professional football journey with the Rams in 1980, selected in the third round of the NFL Draft after an impressive collegiate career at the University of Kansas. He dedicated 10 of his 11 professional seasons to the Rams organization, concluding his career with a single season playing for the Detroit Lions.
Demonstrating his prowess as a formidable "lockdown" cornerback, Irvin earned first-team All-Pro honors in 1981. That season, he recorded three interceptions, forced two fumbles, recovered three fumbles, and achieved his first career sack over 16 games.
Irvin possessed a remarkable ability to create game-changing plays, particularly through interceptions, accumulating 35 throughout his professional career. A highlight of his career was the 1984 season, where he secured five interceptions, two of which he dramatically returned for touchdowns. These two "pick-sixes" led the entire league that year.
By this stage, Irvin had firmly established himself as a star cornerback for the Rams, garnering Pro Bowl selections in both 1985 and 1986. His exceptional performance in 1985 also earned him second-team All-Pro recognition, followed by another first-team All-Pro designation in 1986.
Across his distinguished career with the Rams, Irvin compiled an impressive stat line, including 34 interceptions—five of which he returned for touchdowns—along with nine forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries.
The Los Angeles Rams organization released a statement via social media, expressing their sorrow:
"We mourn the loss of Rams Legend LeRoy Irvin. We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."
