Louisiana Man Charged with Federal Murder After Deputy U.S. Marshal's Death, Faces Death Penalty

A man from Louisiana has been formally charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a deputy U.S. marshal. The incident occurred while law enforcement officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant, federal authorities announced on Tuesday.

Clarence A. Frazier Jr., 48, of Alexandria, allegedly barricaded himself inside his residence and opened fire as multiple officers tried to serve a warrant related to an earlier sexual battery charge. This information comes from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana.

Frazier is now charged with the murder of a federal officer. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison or even the death penalty.

Officials identified the fallen officer as Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson, describing him as a devoted husband, father, and son.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a statement regarding the incident.

"Tragically, the defendant's alleged actions claimed the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who was simply doing his duty," Blanche stated. "The alleged perpetrator is now in custody and will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

Confrontation During Warrant Service

According to official reports, the shooting took place on July 13. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service, alongside the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, had located Frazier at his home and secured a search warrant for the property.

The federal criminal complaint indicates that Frazier had previously failed to appear in state court for trial on a charge of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities.

After announcing their presence, law enforcement personnel gained entry into the residence, authorities confirmed.

Frazier then reportedly barricaded himself within a bedroom and began firing at the officers, striking Deputy Hanson.

Following a brief standoff inside the bedroom, Frazier was ultimately apprehended.

Deputy Hanson later succumbed to the gunshot wounds he sustained during the exchange of gunfire.
