Texas Christian University (TCU) has reversed an earlier decision, announcing the full reinstatement of press credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. This move comes after the university had revoked the newspaper's access last week, just days before the football team commenced its season.
Initial Conflict and Reporting Impact
The Horned Frogs opened their season overseas in Dublin, Ireland, facing the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. However, Steven Johnson, the Star-Telegram's TCU reporter, was compelled to cover the international matchup from the general seating area rather than the press box.
The university had initially withdrawn the publication's credentials following a report detailing a locker room altercation. This incident reportedly led to the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields. Ironically, TCU's home games are played at Amon G. Carter Stadium, a venue named in honor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's founder and publisher, highlighting a historical connection between the institutions.
Resolution and Moving Forward
Following discussions, the university's athletic department confirmed the restoration of media access. A statement from TCU Athletics read:
"Today, TCU Athletics fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In a series of productive discussions, we made clear our position and resolved to move forward. The Horned Frogs ultimately fell to UNC in Ireland with a final score of 15-10. The team is scheduled to return to action on September 12, when they will host the Grambling State Tigers.
