US Military Sinks Vessel Linked to Los Choneros Narco-Terrorists in Eastern Pacific

The United States military announced on Wednesday that it intercepted and subsequently sank a vessel in the Eastern Pacific, which authorities identified as a support asset for a "narco-terrorist" organization. This operation was carried out by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

SOUTHCOM specified that the target vessel was connected to Los Choneros, an entity it characterized as a violent narco-terrorist group.

Interdiction Details and Objectives

In a detailed statement, SOUTHCOM explained the events of September 2, noting that under the direction of Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, and in close coordination with the Government of Ecuador, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) successfully interdicted the vessel. The craft was found operating as a mobile refueling station, facilitating illicit at-sea drug trafficking operations within international waters of the Eastern Pacific.

Intelligence assessments confirmed the vessel's role in supporting the violent Los Choneros narco-terrorist organization.

Personnel from the U.S. Marine Corps and sailors aboard the USS San Antonio executed the interdiction, boarding, searching, and clearing the vessel without incident.

Following the operation, several individuals found on board were safely removed from the vessel and subsequently transferred into the custody of Ecuadorian authorities. Once the crew was secured, U.S. forces proceeded to sink the vessel.

SOUTHCOM emphasized that this decisive action severs a crucial logistical link for the alleged drug traffickers. The command did not disclose the precise geographical coordinates of the operation.

This particular interdiction forms part of the broader mission of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C) and JTF-WHEM, aimed at dismantling narco-terrorist networks throughout the region.

General Donovan articulated the strategic importance of such operations, stating,

We are taking decisive action to dismantle and destroy sophisticated logistics networks used by narco-terrorists to traffic drugs and spread violence throughout the Western Hemisphere.

He further elaborated on the capabilities demonstrated:

This operation demonstrated the elite capabilities and precision of Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, which is on watch in the region to apply total systemic friction on these networks.

Video footage of the operation, released by SOUTHCOM, depicted military personnel intercepting the vessel, conducting the boarding, and ultimately sinking the craft.

SOUTHCOM also publicly responded after Ecuador's Ministry of National Defense shared clips of the operation via social media, reiterating its commitment:

This recent interdiction aligns with a months-long campaign initiated by the Trump administration, specifically designed to disrupt and dismantle trafficking networks linked to cartels.

SOUTHCOM has been actively involved in numerous strikes across the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, targeting vessels believed to be connected to "narco-terrorists".

Just last week, the military confirmed it conducted an operation in the Caribbean that resulted in the deaths of four individuals identified as alleged "narco-terrorists".

The ongoing campaign by the Trump administration, focused on suspected cartel vessels, has now accounted for at least 227 fatalities across 68 reported strikes over approximately one year.
